Recently, our Oxford Revise team worked with expert practitioners from to deliver dynamic, performance-based GCSE revision workshops to bring Shakespeare to life and boost student confidence.

Over 450 schools across England entered a competition to win one of these bespoke workshops, designed to make Shakespeare and revision more accessible. 11 schools were selected as winners and received a tailored workshop, Oxford Revise goodie bags, and study resources.

Becki Bradshaw

Head of Revision and Test Practice

“We are delighted to work with Shakespeare’s Globe to make revision more accessible and bring English Literature set texts to life through these interactive workshops. We know how daunting revision can be, and together with the expert practitioners at Shakespeare’s Globe and Oxford Revise’s three-step approach, we hope that students will be able to sit their mock and future exams with confidence.”

Our award-winning revision guides aim to give learners the knowledge and confidence they need to sit their exams across Key Stage 3, GCSE, and A Levels. To achieve this, we have combined the experience of our subject and revision experts with research-backed cognitive science strategies.

The workshops were built around the three pillars of Oxford Revise: Knowledge, Retrieval, and Practice. Students took part in activities, such as choral pairing and retrieval practice, all aimed at boosting confidence and refining their exam technique.

Led by experts from Shakespeare’s Globe, the sessions explored听Macbeth 补苍诲听Romeo and Julietset texts on the GCSE English Literature syllabus in the UK鈥攖hrough the lens of performance and equipped students with practical strategies to strengthen their revision.

Jo Dovey, English MAT Lead at King Edward VI Academy Trust Birmingham, said:

鈥淭he Shakespeare’s Globe workshop was an opportunity for pupils to actively engage with the text by considering Shakespeare’s choices through practical activities. Our pupils thoroughly enjoyed the session because it allowed them to explore the text in听a different way听and really think about the impact of Shakespeare鈥檚 use of language and structure.

Charlie Withers, Senior Learning Manager at Shakespeare’s Globe, said:

鈥淲e are proud to work with OUP to deliver these sessions to schools across the UK. We feel this is a powerful combination: our drama-focused approach brings Shakespeare’s plays to life for young people in a way that is truly memorable, while the cognitive science which underpins Oxford Revise provides students with tools to听consolidate听their learning over the long-term. We are delighted with the initial response to these sessions and can’t wait to hear from students and teachers about the long-term impact of this partnership later in the school year.”

Opening the doors to trusted research worldwide /feature/opening-the-doors-to-trusted-research-worldwide/ Mon, 04 Aug 2025 12:17:05 +0000 /?post_type=feature&p=5376 At OUP, we aim to maximise the impact and reach of our research content through publishing partnerships such as Research4Life, and our dedicated LMIC programme.

At 糖心VLOG Press, we share the University of Oxford鈥檚 mission to further excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide. It鈥檚 important that we maximize the impact and reach of our research content, and that extends to how we support equitable access in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC).

To close that gap and help institutions access our content, we are proud to be a publisher partner of Research4Life.

Research4Life provides institutions in LMICs with free or heavily reduced rate online access to academic and professional peer-reviewed content, alongside research capacity development through an active programme, helping to bridge the knowledge gap and support sustainable development. This is crucial, as their鈥鈥痜ound that, while 85% of the world鈥檚 population reside in LMICs, only 0.2% of research comes from those same regions.

Through this partnership, and our dedicated鈥,鈥痳esearchers in eligible countries benefit from free or reduced rate access to our academic journals and online products. This applies to over10,000 institutions in 100 countries either directly or through our partnerships with Research4Life and EIFL (Electronic Information for Libraries).

We recently hosted the Research4Life General Partners Meeting to explore how the partnership can collectively advance equity in research throughout LMICs. Held over several days in Oxford, the meeting served as a platform for collaboration, learning, and action.

Here, we reaffirmed our commitment to reducing inequalities in access to knowledge and heard directly from user representatives, Country Connectors, and partners about the challenges they face, the impact 迟丑别测鈥檝别 made, and the opportunities ahead.

Discussions ranged from inclusive publishing and local content development to calls for sustainable funding and policy alignment鈥攈颈驳丑濒颈驳丑迟颈苍驳 the transformative power of equitable access. It was a timely reminder that, while access is essential, true equity requires empowerment, visibility, and long-term investment. We were proud to host this global community and help shape the future of inclusive research.

Graham Grant, Director of Technical Sales & Delivery for EMEA and APAC within our Academic division, is also Co-Chair of Research4Life鈥檚 Eligibility Committee and a member of their Executive Council. He shared:

鈥淎t OUP, our mission is to support excellence in research and education by publishing worldwide. But excellence cannot thrive without equity. That鈥檚 why our partnership with Research4Life is so vital in bridging the gap between access and participation in global research across LMICs.

Through its work, Research4Life have increased research output in LMICs by up to 75%. They empower researchers not just to consume knowledge, but to create it, as authors, editors, and leaders in their fields. Having served on its committees, I鈥檝e seen first-hand the passion, commitment, and collaboration that drive this mission forward. It鈥檚 a privilege to contribute to a community that is reshaping the global research landscape for the better.鈥

Lise McLeod, Chair of the Research4Life Executive Council, said:

鈥淭he 2025 General Partners Meeting and Conference helped us reflect on what equity really means in practice鈥攏ot just widening access but ensuring researchers everywhere can participate fully. It was encouraging to see how far Research4Life has come鈥攁nd how committed the community is to the journey towards inclusion and capacity-building.鈥

As part of our LMIC programme at OUP, we also support open access article processing charge (APC) , enabling eligible researchers to publish their work open access in our journals without financial barriers.

Beginning in August 2025 we have extended this programme, and we now provide authors in 91 countries with a full waiver of open access charges, and authors from a further 38 countries with discounts of up to 75%.

In 2024, our Hong Kong team proudly received the Caring Company award for the eighth year in a row, recognizing our ongoing commitment to supporting our communities. We continue to expand our outreach, partnering with more organizations to serve the local community.

In December 2023, we donated 3,000 children’s readers to Ronald McDonald House Charities Hong Kong, supporting their annual fundraising event鈥攖he 鈥楻ead for Love鈥 Reading Program. This initiative aims to cultivate good reading habits among students and inspire the next generation. Over 2,400 students from schools across Hong Kong participated in the four-to-eight-week reading programme, raising substantial funds for unwell children.

Nancy Yip, the Managing Director of 糖心VLOG Press in Hong Kong, shared: 鈥榃ith roots in Hong Kong for 65 years, OUP is committed to publishing high-quality books and resources to promote a reading culture. We operate in a manner which is ethical and socially responsible. We firmly believe that while spreading knowledge and promoting learning, we should also connect with the community and build a better society through books.鈥

We are continuing to expand our outreach, collaborating with more organizations to serve the local community. This year, we have built new partnerships in Hong Kong with two local non-profit organizations: Changing Young Lives Foundation and The Hub Hong Kong, to support children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Changing Young Lives Foundation provides free educational and holistic development resources to children in need, offering them an opportunity to change their lives. As we share the same vision in education, we donated books to the foundation for the library corner in their new community centre, allowing hundreds of children from nearby neighbourhoods to enjoy reading every day. Our colleagues also volunteered for a storytelling session at the centre in August, teaching children English and engaging them in craft activities.

Additionally, we donated 200 packs of books to The Hub Hong Kong, which provides opportunities to disadvantaged children through providing the tools and supportive environment for development. Over a hundred beneficiaries received the books for their summer holiday, enriching their learning experiences.听

We are proud to have supported with their donation of 25,000 brand-new books to libraries across Ukraine, as part of PEN Ukraine鈥檚 鈥樷 project.

Since Russia鈥檚 invasion in February 2022, Ukraine鈥檚 library network has suffered systematic heavy bombardments. Tetyana Teren, Executive Director of PEN Ukraine, says that “libraries have lost over 187 million books. But even in such circumstances, society demonstrates unity and resilience.”

Working with our longstanding charity partner Book Aid International, we have provided a financial donation to support the shipment of the books, which was dispatched from London on 7 November. All of the books have been donated by leading UK publishers and selected to provide opportunities to learn English, read for pleasure, and find respite in libraries.

Commenting on the donation, our CEO Nigel Portwood said:

鈥淲e are proud to support Book Aid International, sharing the belief that books have the power to transform people鈥檚 lives and unlock opportunities. Having seen the impact of Book Aid International鈥檚 work over many years now, we know that this initiative with PEN Ukraine will make a real difference to those who have faced immeasurable challenges as a result of the war.鈥

The shipment is due to reach Kyiv later in November. From there, will distribute books to libraries across Ukraine, including to frontline and liberated territories.

Book Aid International鈥檚 Chief Executive Alison Tweed said of the donation:

鈥淔or people living with the war in Ukraine we know that libraries have become places of safety and refuge for communities, as well as havens where reading and learning can continue. I would like to warmly thank Hachette UK, OUP, and other publishers who have supported this shipment and all the publishers who donate books to support all the work we do.鈥

Tetyana Teren spoke more on the ‘Unbreakable Libraries’ initiative:

鈥淥ur joint initiative together with Book Aid International, PEN International, English PEN and leading publishing houses received a big response in Ukraine. Just in the first days after the project announcement, over 300 libraries from different parts of Ukraine sent us book requests. It emphasizes the importance of the project for the entire country. And I want to thank everyone who makes this initiative possible.鈥

At OUP, we are committed to supporting our communities around the world in many ways, and an integral part of this work is donating to charities and educational initiatives in line with our mission. You can read more about our responsible activities in our most recent .

In August, our Mainland China team hosted our latest partner conference – Oxford Day 2023 – in Shanghai, after a four year break due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Over 100 of our partners and industrial players gathered together to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the education industry in China.

Rui Ding, Managing Director, opened the conference with a keynote speech titled ‘Reading: The Starting Point for Children’s Learning in the New Era’, and explained why reading is still the starting point for children growing up in a time with rapid technological and social change. He pointed out that reading can nurture children’s curiosity, imagination, and creativity, as well as their ability to judge and focus, empowering them to face the future with confidence.

Rui said that “reading” is not only about reading words, pictures, books or films, but also about experiences, and that reading and experiences should go hand in hand. In China, we hope to work with our partners to create a diverse array of products that meet the needs of Chinese learners and enrich the learning experience, encouraging them to read nature, humanities, and science, and read to a brighter future.

Evolving needs of young learners

In the morning session, Helen Sun, Chief Content Officer, provided a comprehensive overview of our content strategy and latest developments. She emphasized that, in the era of artificial intelligence (AI), children’s creativity remains unparalleled and irreplaceable, and it is our responsibility to safeguard and nurture their imagination.

Felix Zhao, Senior Academic Manager, shared insights on learners’ evolving habits, needs, and learning environments, and how we are using these findings to ensure we give them high-quality resources which will help to address their challenges when learning.

Learning through stories

Ivy Zhu, Director of Content Development for Local Strategic Programmes, and Marsha Hua, Content Development Consultant, elaborated on our local content product for China and Hong Kong, the (TAO). Based on the principle of “Learning through stories”, the TAO series is the latest children’s encyclopedia series that integrates knowledge points into engaging stories to provide learning experiences for children. With over 1,000 captivating stories, the TAO series covers pre-school and primary school levels, enabling children to independently learn about China and subjects such as world culture, English, science, and economics.

Six lively parallel panel discussions took place in the afternoon of Oxford Day, during which colleagues and guests debated topics such as well-rounded education, integrated and digital content solutions, and new media sales channels – concluding a successful Oxford Day for 2023.
