Submissions are open for the Oxford Sa茂d Global Climate Change Challenge 2025, a competition in which students and teachers from around the world are invited to join forces in combatting the climate crisis.

The Climate Change Challenge, in partnership with Sa茂d Business School and the University of Oxford, aims to inspire high school students and teachers to apply their innovation, creativity, and problem-solving skills to generate unique solutions to tackle climate change鈥攚hether at a local, national, or global level.听

Following the success of the 2024 competition鈥攚hich received over 1,000 entries from more than 58 countries鈥攚e are proud to be continuing our support for the Climate Change Challenge and its encouragement of climate education, innovation, and action.

As we mark Earth Day 2025, we are committed to educating students on climate change, as well as reducing our impact on the climate and nature from our own operations. Last year we announced our aim to reach net zero by 2050, and have detailed our progress against our other sustainability goals in our most recent Responsible Publishing Report.

The Climate Change Challenge welcomes student and teacher submissions, asking them to respond to one of five key climate change challenges:

  • Air pollution: caused by industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, and other pollutants, and can lead to respiratory problems and severe health issues
  • Extreme weather events: how communities can prepare for and respond to the increasing frequency and intensity of hurricanes, droughts, and heatwaves
  • Food security: climate change threatens agriculture and food production, making it harder to feed a growing population
  • Water scarcity: adverse effects on water availability can lead to droughts in some regions and flooding in others
  • Biodiversity: as ecosystems face unprecedented threats due to climate change, biodiversity conservation is essential to sustaining life on Earth.

Finalists from the student competition will have the opportunity to present their projects at Sa茂d Business School in Oxford, and the finalists of the teacher competition will present at COP30 in Brazil in November 2025. Overall winners will attend a tailored climate change programme at Sa茂d Business School in spring 2026.

Submissions are now open and will close at 23:59 GMT on 30 June 2025. You can find out more information and enter the Climate Change Challenge .

We鈥檝e announced our aim to decarbonize by 2050 at the latest.

Our Net Zero target and strategy will focus on reducing carbon emissions from all parts of our operations and supply chain, including the production of our books and journals.

In line with our commitments under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) Publishers Compact and Publishing Declares Climate Pledge, we鈥檝e set a science-based target that supports the UN鈥檚 goal of limiting global warming to 1.5掳C.

Zoe Cokeliss Barsley, Director of Sustainability, explains: As a global publisher, it鈥檚 crucial that the actions we take today continue to reduce our impact on the planet and contribute to a more sustainable future for communities worldwide. We鈥檝e made great progress on our 2025 targets, and these have laid the foundations for the next step in our sustainability strategy that centres on a realistic and achievable Net Zero commitment.”

Most of our carbon footprint comes from printing and distribution, so to achieve Net Zero we need to focus on reducing emissions from print publications. This includes printing on demand where possible, engaging suppliers on emissions reductions and targets, and continuing to expand our digital publishing activities.听

We鈥檝e already made significant progress towards our 2025 sustainability goals, which includes halving emissions from our offices, warehouses, and business travel. These carbon savings have resulted from, for example: the use of zero-carbon electricity to power our head office in Oxford, solar panels at our Karachi facility that help to reduce the site鈥檚 reliance on diesel for back-up generators, and the electric forklift vehicles that transport stock within our warehouses.

Our Group Operations Director, Rob Dalby shared, “At OUP we鈥檝e made great strides in reducing the environmental impact of our publications, with 90% of all the paper we use being certified sustainable. Thanks to positive engagement with our printers worldwide, we are well on the way to achieving our 100% sustainable paper target.”

“Now, we are expanding our focus on sustainable print to address the greenhouse gas emissions that arise from paper manufacture, print production, and freight. With our new Net Zero target, we build on the existing steps we have taken to reduce emissions from our own operations.”

“I would like to thank everyone at the Press for their commitment and contributions to our sustainability efforts to date, and for their ongoing support in delivering Net Zero.”

CEO听听

Nigel Portwood

“Throughout our 500-year history, we have continuously adapted to changes in the world around us, and taking steps to operate sustainably is no different. Committing to a Net Zero target is a significant milestone, and I am proud that OUP is taking action to protect and preserve our environment for generations to come.”

This new addition offers teachers a way to inspire children when talking about sustainability. The curriculum, supported by lesson plans and other resources to bring it to life, focuses on the importance of inspiring children about the change they can make to build a more sustainable world.听

Wellbeing remains at the heart of the (OIC).听 To address the risk of climate anxiety among children, we put the emphasis on how no change is too small to make an impact, from everyday decisions to bigger collective action.听

How we put our curriculum together

Teachers told us they want to teach sustainability, but are concerned about the practicalities of how to do so. Students are passionate about 鈥済oing green鈥 and want to have the knowledge and skills to live sustainably and pursue green careers. We also know that reducing climate anxiety and offering hope is key.听

Guided by the , we worked with subject matter experts including , a pioneer in the field and our curriculum developer, as well as teachers Jody Ellenby and Rebecca Tudor and a range of external experts from academia and beyond.听

The curriculum has three domains which reoccur and build each year for years 1 to 9:

  • Taking responsibility for the difference we make鈥
  • Living on Planet Earth
  • Making change.

The interdisciplinary curriculum follows a project-based methodology covering Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) subjects.

We believe it is important that everyone has access to quality information about sustainability, so our resources are designed to cater for a variety of learning styles 鈥 both in print and online. This includes digital books, lesson plans, professional development as well as print project books and teacher鈥檚 guides.听

What this means for teachers

Matthew Davidson, Head of the Oxford International Curriculum at OUP, said “72% of international school teachers we surveyed told us that they do not use any published resources to teach Sustainability, but the majority (89%) would like to. I鈥檓 really excited for teachers to try out our new curriculum as we鈥檙e confident that it will help teachers and learners both flourish and take better care of our planet.鈥
