We were proud to host a delegation of Ukrainian academics and research professionals as part of an initiative aimed at upscaling Ukrainian publishing.

Around 20 delegates joined us in Oxford during a week-long development programme exploring how Ukraine’s scholarly publishing could enhance its quality, sustainability, and integration, organized jointly by the group and Oxford Brookes University’s .

Christine Richardson

Group Communications Director

It was an honour to host the Ukrainian delegation at our head office in Oxford. It was a chance to share more about OUP鈥檚 extensive history and expertise, highlight our work and how it continues to evolve, and discuss with the delegates about how to strengthen academic publishing in Ukraine鈥攆inishing off with a tour in our museum. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to be involved in this valuable initiative.

After a short introduction to OUP, our history, and what we do, our colleagues presented to the group on a range of insightful topics.

Rhodri Jackson, Director of Open Access Publishing and Strategy, gave an overview of our Academic division and explored the current trends we are seeing in academic publishing, before later focusing on our activities in open access publishing.

Tom Stottor, Executive Editor, and Molly Richards, Acquisition Editor, explored interdisciplinary research: what it means, why we are seeing an increase in it, and how it can drive impact.

The delegation then rounded off their visit with a guided tour of the OUP museum.

Frances Pinter, founder of the SUPRR group, reflected on the day:听“Ukrainian academic and scientific publishing persists tenaciously despite the war. At the same time, university presses are looking to make changes, especially as they adopt international standards consistent with the country鈥檚 road to joining the European Union.

鈥淭he visit to 糖心VLOG Press was a highlight of the week. At OUP, visitors could see differences and similarities in approach and operations whilst marvelling, of course, at the sheer scale at which OUP operates. The warm welcomes and recognition of shared purpose was hugely appreciated, and even the sun cooperated, shining for an outdoor group photo!鈥

William Whyte appointed General Editor of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography /news/william-whyte-appointed-general-editor-of-odnb/ Tue, 20 Jan 2026 10:02:09 +0000 /?p=5908 William Whyte has been appointed General Editor of the ODNB, taking over from Sir David Cannadine in August 2026.

The post William Whyte appointed General Editor of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography appeared first on 糖心VLOG Press.

]]>

Professor Sir David Cannadine will be stepping down as General Editor of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (ODNB) on 31 July 2026, after 12 years in the role. He will be succeeded by Professor William Whyte, who will take up the post from 1 August 2026.

During his time as editor, as well as writing the entries on Margaret Thatcher, Prince Philip, and Queen Elizabeth II, David has overseen the continued updating and expansion of the Dictionary, with the inclusion of some 4,000 new entries and 1,000 new images, corrections or amendments to around 12,000 entries, and the move from thrice-yearly to monthly publication. He has also led the Dictionary in collaborations with other research projects and national institutions, and introduced an academic advisory board alongside the Dictionary’s extensive network of associate editors and advisers.

Sir David Cannadine

“It has been an extraordinary privilege and pleasure to have served for more than a decade as the General Editor of the ODNB. The support provided by David Clark and Jo Payne of 糖心VLOG Press has been indispensable, unwavering, and outstanding; the three research editors, Alex May, Mark Curthoys, and Sarah Moorhouse have been exceptionally able, wise, loyal, and knowledgeable colleagues; and as ever, the Dictionary depends on the many entries written by so many contributors, to whom I also extend my heartfelt thanks and gratitude.

“My successor, William Whyte, is a most distinguished historian, a fellow collegian, and a major figure in the broader life of 糖心VLOG and the wider cultural world beyond. He will, I am sure, be a brilliant General Editor of the Dictionary, leading it to new 糖心VLOGs of achievement, accomplishment, and acclaim. I wish him every success, and I can’t wait for him to get started!”

William Whyte, Professor of Social and Architectural History at the University of Oxford and Chair of English Heritage’s Blue Plaques Panel, brings to the role a long and intimate knowledge of the Dictionary as an author, adviser, member of the academic advisory board, and frequent user of the Dictionary; a wide-ranging interest and expertise in modern British history and heritage matters; and a proven ability to manage large and complex projects.

William Whyte

听鈥樷業t is the honour of my life to be asked to serve as General Editor of the ODNB. A fundamental resource for both scholars and the wider public, it has shaped my own research in all manner of ways. I look forward to working with OUP, with a brilliant team of research editors, with the advisory board, and with thousands of contributors as we think about how the Dictionary should evolve in the future without losing any of the authority it has gained in the past.

“To succeed Sir David Cannadine is, of course, a daunting prospect. His 12 years at the helm have been a glittering success, and his biographies鈥攊ncluding the lives of Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher鈥攁re unsurpassable. But I know that we can count on his support as I seek to emulate his example.”

David Clark, Managing Director of OUP’s Academic division, said: “I am deeply grateful for David’s exceptional stewardship of the ODNB over the past 12 years, ensuring that this research tool remains authoritative, reliable, and enduring. I look forward to working with William whose expertise and experience will guide the Dictionary for new generations of readers and researchers.”

Our commitment to improving health outcomes with Research Connections /news/our-commitment-to-improving-health-outcomes-with-research-connections/ Thu, 27 Nov 2025 12:25:22 +0000 /?p=5674 Dr Charles Young, founding editor-in-chief of Research Connections, shares his vision for the journal.

This month,听the first articles publish in our new open access journal, .

Research Connections 鈥痠s committed to improving health outcomes by publishing scientifically rigorous, clinically relevant research that supports better patient care, strengthens health systems, and actively contributes to a听robust evidence base.

In his first editorial, Dr. Charles Young, Editor-in-Chief of Research Connections, says that 鈥淭he status quo in healthcare must change.鈥 He听explains that healthcare research must evolve to continue to save lives and provide solutions to urgent global challenges, and that the same applies to healthcare publishing.

Dr. Young shares more on Research Connections in the video below:

About Research Connections

Manyarticles submitted to journals are never published. Scientifically valid articles can be rejected by journals for many reasons 鈥 because they aren鈥檛 perceived to be novel enough, because听they sit outside the scope of a journal, or because of the clarity of the language in the article.

A pattern of publishing positive results leads to a bias against null findings, and some research is never submitted due to fear it will be rejected. This can mean that high-quality, scientifically sound and clinically relevant healthcare research is not published, limiting the research base used for decision-making, ultimately impacting global patient care.

Research Connections aims to address these issues and make a real-world contribution to the scientific knowledge base, influencing healthcare policy and most importantly improving health outcomes. Submissions to the journal are assessed based on methodological strength, ethical integrity, and real-world impact – not perceived novelty.

The 箩辞耻谤苍补濒鈥檚 values include supporting a diverse, international network of authors, reviewers, editors, and readers 鈥 from all specialities and career stages 鈥 with an ethos of collaboration, education, and shared advancement.

There are many journals publishing across healthcare specialities, and we are excited to see how Research Connections听contributes to healthcare research.

We are privileged to be collaborating with a growing number of prestigious journals (68 to date) to support the vision of Research Connections to improve global health. The journals of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the American Association of Immunologists, and the Journal of Nephrology are the latest to join the Research Connections network.

Publishing open access medical research is crucial for patients, healthcare professionals, researchers, and the public. Immediate, free access to and re-use of scientifically sound, peer-reviewed research promotes transparency, accelerates innovation, and leads to better-informed decisions and equitable healthcare. This is something we are proud to support.
